Outlook/Exchange Backup archive mistake

This post addresses a common mistake users make with Outlook connected to an Exchange server.

One of my customers recently got a new computer. We transfered his documents, desktop, Outlook - exchange , etc. Today he mentioned his saved messages were missing. Upon investigation I discovered he was archiving his messages that he wanted to save long term using the Outlook archive feature. The flaw in this is that while his exchange mailbox is stored on the server, and thus backed up and availble when he changes computers, the archive folder in outlook is stored on his local hard drive and subject to being lost in case of corruption or hard drive failure.

A better method for keeping messages is to create a folder in the primary mailbox and move messages to there.
